Pitch-fever

Remember that news I said I hoped to share soon? Here it is.

March Madness!

I’ve been away for a plethora of circumstances. I’ll give you a little peek into my world these last eleven days:

1. My computer, henceforth to be called “Regan”, taunts me each time I power up, freezing for no reason, shutting down without provocation and doing everything short of spewing split pea soup at me. I threatened her with replacement but she merely laughed in my face, knowing full well I don’t have the money. Right now she’s watching, waiting, storing up an electrical charge to get me…

2. We’re on Day 7 of Spring Break. Today is only the second day of sunshine. The count thus far: five full-blown wrestling matches, seventeen screaming fits, three losses of computer privileges, two one-on-one basketball games with No. 1 son, four forts built with No. 2 son, and one breakdown by Dad to purchase the Transformers Movie.

3. Go Jayhawks!!

4. In others’ news, my friend Deanna received an email from from Ze Frank, geek extraordinaire (insert binary solo in his honor), who asked about this painting. My friend Angie won a “Healing Through Art” award for her poem “LIttle Girl Lost.”

5. That’s all for now. Regan has been very patient while I posted. I don’t want to wear out her good humor, as I must check my email periodically.

Happy Vernal Equinox, everyone!

2007: Retrospect

Reconnected with old friends

Reconnected with husband

Used the f-word in front of my kids more than once.

Still ashamed of that fact

Adopted two beagles

Watched a sister endure heartbreak, cancer diagnosis, surgery and treatment

Pulled off a successful writers conference

Still didn’t get a book deal

Attended several other writing conferences

Realized I have a long, long way to go to become the writer I want to be.

Suffered crippling loss of faith and hope

Blew off building a writing career

Decided to re-enter the workforce after ten years of freelancing

Met a former editor who loved CLEMENTINE’s first chapter

Still can’t find an agent who loves WOLF

Met Chris Isaak

Met David Sedaris

Met lots of other wonderful people

Worked too hard on PTA commitments.

Applied to Hallmark for a writing position. Twice.

Spent four days in a beautiful location trying to regain my love of writing.

Wondering what 2008 might bring.
Still hopeful.

Random Monday Musings

1. No. 2 Son’s most recent culinary experiment — American cheese niblets soaked in pure vanilla extract and water — spilled all over my kitchen when he tried to add a dash of Tabasco. In case you wondered, yes, American cheese does break down into a slimy facsimile of itself when soaked in vanilla water. On the upside, my kitchen smells like cookies.

2. No. 1 Son appeared in our metro newspaper today as part of a panel of experts who tested school supplies. The feature looked great, with full-color photos of all the kids. In response to the question, “What is your favorite subject in school?” No. 1 Son replied, “Recess.”

3. I went to a multi-class reunion mixer Friday night. About 300 of us stormed the local Cheeseburger in Paradise. Poor staff never knew what hit them… I forgot my camera and so am relying on others:

Old friends. We look awesome for a bunch of 40-year-olds! Photo by Dave Minard. Thanks, Angie!

Husband (in green) and I (brown tank) amid 1/4 of the crowd. Seriously. See? Here’s another 1/4. of the crowd outside. And this is just 1/2 of the bar. Photos by Sean Tevis, nabbed from the Class of 1987 reunion weekend photos

4. JWKC’s Editors Day officially sold out today!! Whoo Hoo! We’ll welcome writers from across Kansas and Missouri as well as Ohio, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Florida. Fanboy, stop reading this blog and get back to writing!

5. Heading to a novel writing workshop with Ashley and Carolyn Grayson tomorrow.

6. Taking a family vacation for Husband’s 50th birthday next week. We’ll return home just in time to get No. 1 son to his first day of school. No. 2 son starts all-day Kindergarten this year. And that means in just fourteen short days I’ll have the house to myself for the first time in ten years! What will I do? *grin*
